Hey everyone,

                        Recently I've been exploring the internet in search of something new and was trying to figure out how and where the contents present on the internet are actually stored and the answer I found was pretty shocking. What if I told you, the contents you find from your favourite search engine or Google just accounts for less than 10% of the total content available on the total internet. The internet we use for social media, browsing, video games etc. is called the surface web. If we go further into the internet we will find the Deep Web and if we dig even deeper we can find the Dark Web.

So, what is the Deep Web?

The definition is pretty simple, Its the stuff on the internet which you cannot find using Google or any other search engines. Things like private social media profiles, hidden medical, scientific, financial records to the archived databases it is literally the stuff on the internet which you can't access without knowing the actual URL and some special access permissions. If you think about this, It makes perfect sense. There are millions of Facebook accounts, companies with sensitive data, cloud storage, Government secrets and private videos from YouTube and other sites they all are inaccessible unless given some special permissions.

It is estimated that 99% of the contents in the surface web is stored in the Deep web and it is commonly compared to an Iceberg like the one which sank the Titanic. The surface web is just the tip of the iceberg and the deep web is the part of the iceberg which is underwater and you can't see it except instead of ice it contains corporate secrets and private accounts.

How do you access the dark web and what's in it?

To gain access to the dark web you need some kind of software which encrypts and anonymizes your connection. The best known and most popular software used for this purpose is the onion router or Tor browser. As you can peel an onion several times until you reach its core the tor browser works in a similar way. It encrypts the data which is sent by bouncing it back and forth across the globe and during each bounce only some amount of data is being decrypted, only after reaching the destination the data can be fully seen. This peeling concept of encryption layers is inspired by Onions hence its name. This process gives the user complete anonymity and makes it impossible to track the user.

Due to the complete anonymity of Tor, it earned its reputation for all sorts of illegal stuffs from drugs, trafficking of weapons, animals and even humans, hitman services(ya, you can hire an Assassin),

This may make us think that Tor would have been invented by some Drugpin or Notorious criminal agency but it is not the case to everyone's shock it was actually invented by the US Navy for secure communications and they are constantly trying to catch people who are using it for notorious purposes.

Even though the Dark web has it's darker side it has lot of good things too it provides protection to Human rights activists, Nations who can't get a voice to themselves due to their oppressive rulers, people hiding from abusers, people who want to share political views anonymously or people who just want some privacy in this age of technology where everything you do is being watched. In fact, the American Government actually funds the dark web for people who are trying to speak out in Authoritarian countries.

The usage of the Dark and Deep web is increasing rapidly as people want to have privacy but just have a precaution that even the best security can be destroyed.
